Norma L. Muller, 87, formerly of Washington Ave., Hamden and Florence Rd., Mineola, NY, died peacefully at home at Whitney Center on November 17, 2012. Born Norma Louise Dittus on July 15, 1925, in Middle Village Queens, she was the cherished only child of the late Charles and Sophie (Busching) Dittus. On June 6, 1948 she married Richard L. Muller at St. Margaret's Church, Middle Village. They met when she was just fourteen, and became sweethearts while he was serving in the army during World War II. Prior to and for many years following marriage she pursued a career as an executive secretary with American Airlines in New York City, where she established a love of travel. In ensuing years Norma's energies were focused on home and family life in Mineola, where she and Richard raised four sons. They spent many happy hours in their backyard pool and travelling to Florida and the Caribbean, where Dick and the boys learned to scuba dive. She valued education highly, supporting Dick in his efforts to earn advanced engineering and teaching degrees, and was particularly proud as each of her sons graduated college and attained a doctoral degree in his profession. Once her children were grown she worked at Elpa Marketing and at Mineola High School, and continued to be active in social and civic groups. She and Richard travelled more widely, and especially enjoyed journeys in their RV to visit family and friends. An enthusiastic animal lover, she went to great lengths in caring for her pets. After resettling in Hamden she greatly enjoyed being part of the community of building #7 at the Commons at Mill River, fondly referred to as 'Seventh Heaven,' before moving to Whitney Center last year. The focus and highlight of her later life though, was spending time with her husband, sons and seven grandchildren, in whom she took great pride and enjoyment. Besides her beloved husband of sixty-four years, Norma leaves sons Richard (Debbie)of Simsbury, Wayne (Brenda) of Del Mar, CA, Douglas (Lisa) of Hamden, and James of Salt Lake City, UT, as well as grandchildren Stephanie, Andrea, Alexandra, Dana, Melanie, Andrew and William Muller. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24th at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. Friends may visit with the family before the service from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Centerville Cemetery, Hamden. Memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Food Bank, P.O. Box 8686, New Haven, CT 06531, and (203) 469-5000.
