March 12, 1962 ~ October 28, 2023

Born in: Bloomfield, CT
Resided in: Waterford, CT

Robert Elihu Naviasky, 61, of Waterford, CT, passed away on October 28, 2023, with his wife Sharon Purcell by his side. Bobby was born in Bloomfield, CT to the late Arthur and Julia Galinsky Naviasky, and lovingly raised by his father and adopted mother, the late Gladys Jacobson Naviasky, after Julia passed away. He is survived by his brother, Laurence Naviasky; sister-in-law, Barbara Pats; nephews, Jacob, Gabriel, and Ethan, along with many extended family and friends far and wide.
Bob embraced his role as step-parent to William and Nolan Burhans, with a perfect combination of love, support, wisdom, and fun with a grace that was remarkable, and truly a testament to his character.
Bob graduated from UCONN with a BA in 1984. After an unexpected stint as a summer Hebrew school teacher, he discovered his path, and went on to St. Joseph’s College for his Master’s in Education in 1992. After beginning his career in teaching, Bob really found his passion in the Alternative Education Program at Middletown High School, where he ran and taught the program for most of his time as an educator until retiring in 2022. His ability to connect with the students and help them achieve what most thought impossible was a gift to so many. Naviasky, or ‘Mr. Nav’ to his students, was a teacher, mentor, surrogate parent, counselor, snack provider and safe place both during and after their high school years. He was always so pleased and honored when a former student took time to contact him after they graduated. He loved and respected the determination they showed to choose lives they could be proud of. In 2005, he was awarded the Education Award in appreciation of selfless dedication to improving the lives of others from the Middlesex County NAACP, a recognition Bob was immensely proud of, and in 2022, the City of Middletown declared June 27th “Bob Naviasky Day” in honor of his retirement.
Bob’s diagnosis took a toll on his ability to continue the activities he loved; kayaking, biking, riding, running, swimming, weightlifting. He became content watching sports, old movies and vintage TV, talking on the phone to his many friends, and never missed his daily very early morning walk with his dog, Zennie. It did not compromise his love of cake, cookies and ice cream.
Bob was a gentle soul in a solid body, a bit intimidating at first but with a genuinely kind heart that showed in his beautiful eyes when he smiled. To be able to share his life was an unforgettable privilege. May we all aspire to incorporate his good work into our lives.
A scholarship has been created in Bob’s name, to be awarded to an ALTED Middletown H.S. student looking to continue their education. Further information on how to contribute will become available, or a donation to an animal rescue or dog sanctuary in Bob’s name would also be appreciated.

  1. Bob was so much to so many. I am grateful for our friendship earlier in my career. He was a wise confidant. His impact on the MHS community is not forgotten. Rest in peace.

    • So very sorry to hear of Bobs passing. I would love to make a donation to the scholarship fund once info is available. My condolences to all that loved him.

  2. Bob was a true friend and an inspiration. He was one of the first people at MHS to welcome me and I am forever grateful for his kindness, his wit, and his dedication to the most challenging and needy among our students. I will always think of him when I use my Hawkeye spinning top travel mug. Peace and love to you always my friend.

  3. Rest in peace, dear Bob. You helped a lot of people, and your legacy will live on.
I send my deepest condolences to the family. May you find strength & peace during this difficult time.

  4. Bob became a friend during his last years at Middletown High. He would stop by my room with his trusty notebook in which he recorded all of the movies he watched. He knew I teach film and wanted someone to discuss what he’d seen with. Movies were the beginning of the conversation, and it was a pleasure to talk film with someone who’d seen as much as Bob had, but our talks always ran to many other topics as well. More than anything, I’ll remember Bob’s humanity, his kindness, and his values. You are missed, my friend.

  5. I’m so very sorry to hear about Bob’s passing. I enjoyed working with him and discussing the students and always trying to help him any way I could. He was a great man, selfless and always put his students first trying to make their lives better. He will be extremely missed. My deepest heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. RIP Bob.

  6. I am so very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. It was an honor and pleasure to work with him at MHS. His unwavering dedication to his students changed their lives.
My deepest condolences to his family.

  7. My deepest condolences. Although we didn’t stay in touch through the years, my memories of Bob are as strong as ever. He was a great friend as we both were trying to figure out what life had in store for us. RIP FB!

  8. I was so sorry to read his obituary this morning. I went to college with Bob and we had quite a few mutual friends but lost touch in the 90s. I had no idea he was living in Waterford, the same town as me. He was a good friend and gone too soon but it sounds like he was loved and lived a great life, helping others, and advocating for the less fortunate. I am not surprised. My warmest condolences to his wife and family.☮️

  9. I’m so very sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. My mother and I knew him from Seaside from when Lucille would cool herself off under the shade of our beach umbrellas. We would always talk to Bob about what a great, friendly dog she was. He loved that dog. I then got my own dog a few years later and Rocky and Lucille became best friends. We would meet Bob every Saturday and Sunday morning at either Seaside, Harkness, or Waterford Beach, depending on the time of year, and Bob and Lucille would lead the dog pack. It’s been a couple years since we have seen Bob because my dog has gotten older and can’t handle the walks, but we have thought about him often. He talked of his wife and stepsons often and I pray you doing the best you can be during this difficult time for you all.

  10. I was sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. He was always such a nice guy, so thoughtful, kind and always willing to listen. I stopped by his classroom often and he was always so involved in helping his kids succeed. My thoughts go out to his family; he will be missed.

  11. I will never forget Mr. Naviasky! I was one of his students many years ago and he definitely left a big impact on me as well as many others. He was the most dedicated & selfless man I have known. I’m forever grateful I had a teacher who truly cared & never gave up on his students no matter how challenging some of us could be. He was the man for the job. He is very special to me and I’ll forever hold him in my memories. I could never thank him enough for all he has done. He will be missed by so many! My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
    RIP Mr.Naviasky
He would always tell me “all you gotta do is show up & apply yourself” I wish he could see me now.

  12. Bob was a special person who I and many others could always count on as a friend and colleague. I deeply admired him for his dedication to the profession and advocacy for his students. My condolences to the family. Bob will be greatly missed.

  13. I was so sad when I heard about Bob’s passing. He was such a wonderful giving person who loved his students. He worked hard to assist them in becoming successful in life
    He will be greatly missed.
