MERIDEN - Robert Harris Tattoon Johnson, 84, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at MidState Medical Center. He was the husband of Harriet Travers Johnson. Robert was born in Meriden on August 9, 1923 to John Henry Johnson and Margaret Olivia Tattoon Johnson. He was from a large family of sixteen and in growing up he was devoted to his father. Robert Johnson is a descendant of the Mohegan Indians on his mother's side. His father was from North Carolina and met and married Harriet Travers. They had four children: Laura, Robert, Charles and George (who is now deceased.) Everyone knew Robert as 'Johnny'. He was a member of Parker A.M.E. Zion Church where he served on the trustee and steward boards. He worked for many years for the Charles Parker Company until his retirement. During his brief illness, Jessica Blanchette took very good care of him for which the family will always be thankful. He will be dearly missed by his grand and great-grandchildren. He gave every one of them special nicknames and every time they visited they were addressed by their nicknames. Mr. Johnson has a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom, knew how special they were to him. Robert was a member of the Meriden Boy's Club, CT. Conservation Corp., a Meriden Auxiliary Police Officer and the Elks Club of New Britain. Left to cherish his memories are: his devoted wife, Harriet Johnson of Meriden; his daughter, Laura Moses (Thomas) of Meriden; two sons, Robert Johnson (Wynell) of Bristol and Charles Johnson (Myrta) of Naples, FL; two sisters, Loretta Camp of New Haven and Lavinia Jackson of Hamden; his brother, George Johnson (Tamie) of Hawaii; his grandchildren, Harriet Moses of New Britain, Laura Gillard (Tyrone), Robert Johnson, II (Jessica), Thomas Bell (Jamie), all of Meriden, Jeremiah Johnson (Elizabeth) of Tucson, Arizona, Jason Bell (Sorimar) of Meriden, Denise Bell and Melissa Johnson both of Meriden, 16 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Tamie 'Tamiko'; and a special aunt 'Laura'. Besides his son, George L. Johnson he was predeceased by seven brothers, Fredrick, Norman, Gilbert, Clarence, Clifford, Walter and William Johnson, five sisters, Margaret Silvia, Juliette Camp, Arlene Cross, Elsie Jackson and Beatrice Johnson and one grandson, Charles Johnson Jr. His brother George called his 'Ace' and that's what he was to our family. 'Aloha', Dad 'Amen, Amen'. The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Beecher & Bennett - Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. The Rev. Craig M. Hooker will officiate. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions are welcome.
