Robert J. Flanagan, age 81, longtime resident of Hamden and recently Middlebury, passed away on November 26, 2024, at the Vitas Hospice Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury after a long fight with Multiple Myeloma. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Dawn C. (Jerolman) Flanagan. Born in New Haven on March 18, 1943 to the late Kenneth and Helen Keating Flanagan.
He will be lovingly remembered by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. Flanagan, Jr. and Corrina; his grandchildren, Siobhan, Hugh, Ciaran, and Cian Flanagan; his brother, John P. Flanagan and his wife Mary Ann; niece, Eileen (Steven) and nephew, Kevin (Rachel).
After graduating from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Bob attended The University of Notre Dame, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Master’s in Education. He later received a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Administration and Supervision from the University of Bridgeport. Bob served for more than thirty years as a High School teacher and Administrator, which included 20 years in Hamden and 13 years (1986-1999) as Principal of Bethel High School in Bethel, Connecticut.
The family would like to thank the doctors and team at Smilow Cancer Hospital-North Haven for their care over the last two decades.
Friends are invited to visit with Bob’s family on Sunday, December 1st from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 2nd at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 2819 Whitney Ave., Hamden, followed by his interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
