Wayne Burton Conrad passed away peacefully on July 23, 2016 at the age of 94, with family by his side. Wayne was born in New Haven son of the late Clair Hubbard Conrad and Daisy Dix Conrad. He lived for most of his life in Hamden where he worked as a machinist for the Greist Manufacturing Company. He retired in 1986 and moved to Clinton where he enjoyed many healthy and happy years by the shore, which he loved so much. Wayne was a proud veteran of WWII, having served under Gen. George S. Patton in the US Third Army Military Police Corps. He was awarded five bronze stars, representing the five battles in which he fought in Europe and North Africa, including the Battle of the Bulge. Wayne was a Mason for 50 years, belonging to Wooster Lodge in New Haven. He was also a Life Member of the Westbrook Elks, a lifetime member of VFW Post 9918 in Clinton and most recently, an active member of VFW Post 2347 in Washington Township, NJ, where he served as post chaplain. He was recognized for his military service by the Washington Township Post at the Memorial Day celebration this year. His love of flying prompted him to earn a pilot's license. He often flew for pleasure in his Aeronca Champion and occasionally delivered packages in upstate New York. He was a talented musician, gardener, loved fishing and photography in his younger days, and became an avid reader of history later in life. He delighted in regaling friends and family all his life with stories, songs, and jokes. He made many friends during his long life, and cared deeply for them all. His spirit will live on in his children and grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him will miss him dearly. Wayne was the beloved husband of the late Marion Alice Beisiegel, to whom he was married for 61 years, and the brother of the late Lois Fonda Crandall of Yalesville. He leaves behind daughters Barbara Brown, her husband Michael, Lynette Schneider, her husband Bruce, and grandchildren Alison Brown, Helen Schneider, and Joseph Schneider. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service for Wayne at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery, 157 South Pease Road, Woodbridge.
