Winona Zakalske

winona zakalske
Winona J. Gadonski Zakalske, 89, of East Haven, formally a long time resident of West Haven, passed away on March 18, 2015. She was born on October 5, 1925, to the late Louis and Anna Johnson. Winona was the loving mother of LuAnn (Donald) DeMichael and Janet (Michael) Antollino, grandmother of Michael and Joseph Antollino, Nicole (Nicholas) Grasson, Katherine DeMicheal and her fiancé Andrew, great-grandmother of Jack Cooper, and was eagerly awaiting the birth of her second great-grandson in May. Winona is also survived by her much loved sister-in-law and niece, Edith and Laura Johnson. She is predeceased by her husband Peter Zakalske, and her brother Edwin Johnson. Winona was a lifetime parishioner of the First Baptist Church of West Haven where she happily served on and led many committees and events. The church was indeed her second family and brought her years of fulfillment and joy. Other than her family and church, one of her greatest joys was reading. Her daughters would like to thank the nursing and recreational staff of the Talmadge Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the attentive care of their mother, and their support during her stay, especially during her final weeks. Winona was always happy to be back 'home' at Talmadge after a hospital stay. A funeral service will be held for Winona on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 11am in the Beecher & Bennett-Taylor Funeral Home, 410 Campbell Ave. West Haven. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Saturday at 9:30am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Winona's memory to the West Haven Public Library, 300 Elm St. West Haven, CT 06516.
